What is LTL Shipping?

As a transportation and logistics executive, Stephen Patrick Day has more than two decades of experience in the logistics industry. Stephen Day is the president of the Logistics Group International (LGI) in Houston, Texas. LGI offers LTL shipping.

Less-than-truckload or LTL shipping means a shipper can rent a portion of a transport truck's trailer rather than the whole trailer. Renting a portion of the space vs. the whole trailer saves money on shipping costs.

Carriers load freight from many shippers into one trailer. For the percentage of the trailer used by the palletized merchandise, each merchant pays a prorated fee. This makes LTL shipping one of the most cost-effective ways to carry larger-than-parcel cargo without renting a whole vehicle.

LTL trucking companies offer LTL freight transport services. An LTL freight carrier might be a sole proprietorship or a division of a larger corporation, and local, regional, and national carriers provide truck freight transport.
