Understanding the Role of a Freight Broker

An accomplished logistics and transportation executive with more than two decades of experience, Stephen Patrick Day serves as the CEO and president of Logistics Group International (LGI), a Houston-based freight brokerage company that specializes in providing transportation solutions to clients in the US, Mexico &  Canada.

A transportation intermediary, the term freight broker refers to a corporation or an individual that matches a shipper with an authorized motor carrier. In this case, the shipper is the person or entity with goods to transport, while motor carriers provide transportation services. By matching these two groups, freight brokers play an integral role in cargo movement.

Brokers provide a valuable service to both shippers and motor carriers and earn a commission for their efforts. Brokers don't just pair random motor carriers with shippers. Rather, they help shippers find suitable carriers for their goods. Also, brokers assist carriers with the loading of trucks. In many corporations, brokers work in traffic departments where they coordinate all the company's shipping and transportation needs.
