Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association Image from: scranet.org |
SCRA advocates for specialized carriers before federal authorities like the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Currently, SCRA is working with both authorities in various ways for the benefit of specialized carriers. In one instance, the organization is highlighting the importance of factoring oversize and overweight trucks into interchange and intersection designs.
While engineers working with these agencies are focused on designs that increase efficiency and safety for a higher volume of ordinary vehicles, they do not consider the special needs of oversize vehicles despite their volumes and load sizes also increasing. Unlike ordinary cars, oversize trucks cannot use all roads and bridges. Therefore, it is crucial that alternative intersection designs cater to their special needs. SCRA is also working with FHWA to correct the shortage of truck parking spaces across the country.
